Central Eastside

Neighborhood Description: The Central Eastside Industrial Area was once a freight mobility corridor with warehouses and light manufacturing businesses. Today, this neighborhood has carefully grown to encompass some of Portland’s most artistic and creative enterprises, including the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry (OMSI), along with successful restaurants and professional service firms. The Portland Development Commission’s five city-block 1,167,000 SF Burnside Bridgehead project lies in the central Eastside urban renewal area to the north side of the Burnside Bridge.  This project is slated to be complete in January of 2009 and will be a major development in this area. Other notable area developments include Wentworth Chevrolet at MLK Boulevard and Burnside, the Eastbank Commerce Center and Jupiter Hotel (Doug Fir Lounge).

Area Retailers: Dream Cakes, Rodda Paint, Rejuvenation, Paper Zone, Ann Sacks, J & M Café, Pratt & Larsen, Clark Lewis, The Montage, Lippman’s and many more.

Vehicular Counts: 35,887 CPD: SE MLK Boulevard and Taylor (1999).

                                   40,183 CPD: SE Grand Avenue and Belmont (2001).

Transportation: Morrison, Belmont, Division and Hawthorne Streets serve as major arterials for auto, bus and pedestrian traffic into the neighborhood. Traveling East and West, Burnside’s four-lane roadway borders the area to the north and the four-lane east and west traveling Powell Boulevard is the southern most arterial into the neighborhood.  SE 12th Avenue borders the neighborhood to the East and Willamette River to the West. The 3+ mile Eastbank Esplanade loop provides pedestrian and bicycle access to the eastside in addition to connecting to the downtown core. The Esplanade was completed in 2001 and extends from the Steel Bridge to OMSI, located at the south end of the district. Tri-Met Bus serves this neighborhood. SE Grand runs north parallel to the River and MLK Boulevard.
