Neighborhood Description: Portland State University continues to make this area a welcome home to more than 24,000 students, residents, businesses and retailers alike. PSU’s urban campus is situated amongst numerous buildings from SW 13th Avenue to SW 4th Avenue and SW Clay to SW Jackson Street. With buildings that have a mix of research facilities, student housing, businesses and public space, PSU allows students to blend in with the community. A student population, and significant daytime employment base provide a strong customer base for retailers on and around this campus. Spring through fall the park blocks on the PSU's campus comes alive with the renown Portland Farmers' Market, drawing huge crowds of visitors and locals. Area retail has gone through a resurgence, with new mixed-use projects being developed to serve this dense area. Fast, casual food and service-oriented retailers are drawn to the University District's urban student population. Recent additions to PSU's campus include the new Student Recreation Center that is home to over 15,000 square feet of retail and situated in the heart of the campus at SW Fifth Avenue and Harrison Street. The nearby 354-unit newly-constructed Cyan apartment project boasts 6,000 square feet of retail space and provides off-camps green-living at it's finest just steps from the university.
