The Portland Aerial Tram is a key component in the development of the South Waterfront District and the continued growth of OHSU as a major medical research institution. Almost $2 billion in new development will be leveraged by the initial tram investment. Additionally, funding has been approved for the construction of a pedestrian street bridge crossing I-5 and Macadam Avenue to SW Gibbs Street, connecting Lair Hill residents with the South Waterfront medical community, businesses and residents. Signalized intersections with two-way traffic and primary access into the neighborhood will be Curry, Gaines, and Bancroft Streets.
Portland Streetcar extension now connects the Pearl District to PSU, RiverPlace, the South Waterfront neighborhood at SW Gibbs Street. The connection is adjacent to the ariel tram station and OHSU Building One. Full streetcar service in the South Waterfront district is expected to be open by Fall 2007.
